The respiratory tract begins with the nasal or oral passages and extends past to the trachea. The trachea divides into bronchi which subdivide into bronchioles. Lower respiratory specimens include tracheostomy aspirates, bronchial lavages, washings and brushings. The isolation of fungal pathogens can assist clinician in the early initiation of treatment targeted specifically to treat potential fungal disease. |
