Clinical Info

The respiratory tract begins with the nasal or oral passages and extends past to the trachea. The trachea divides into bronchi which subdivide into bronchioles. Lower respiratory specimens include tracheostomy aspirates, bronchial lavages, washings and brushings. The isolation of fungal pathogens can assist clinician in the early initiation of treatment targeted specifically to treat potential fungal disease.

Collection Instructions

1. Collect bronchial lavage or bronchial washing in a screw-capped, sterile container 2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
3. Send specimen refrigerated.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note:  Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
Unacceptable specimens: Specimens collected in formalin or alcohol are unacceptable for culture.
