This assay is intended to be used as an aid to the diagnosis of Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough) and Bordetella parapertussis (whooping cough-like syndrome).

Collection Instructions

Nasopharyngeal (NP) Specimen
Specimen Required: Nasopharyngeal swab or
                                  ESwab
Container/Tube: UTM or VTM M4,
Collection Instructions:
1.Collect specimen using a flexible shaft nasopharyngeal swab (i.e., Flocked, Rayon and Polyester).
2. Gently slide swab along floor of nose with very light pressure to nasopharyngeal wall to allow the swab to absorb secretions.
3. Rotate swab slowly two to three times and withdraw it.
4. Place the swab into an approved transport medium (UTM, M4 or equivalent), close tightly.
5. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and time of collection, and specimen type. 6. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Specimen can be stored at 2°C to 8°C for up to 7 days.
