Collection Instructions

1. Assemble sterile needle onto an appropriate syringe for collection of Myco/F Lytic bottle (3.0-5.0 mL) or Isolator Tube( 0.5- 3 mL Pediatric Isolator or 7-10 mL Standard Isolator). Loosen, but do not remove needle shield.
2.Use 10% PVP iodine solution for disinfecting the stopper of the tube.
3.Prepare venipuncture site by first locating the vein, cleanse with 70% alcohol, let dry, then
apply 2% iodine in concentric rings and allow to dry for 1-2 minutes.
4.Remove needles shield and perform venipuncture. After blood flow begins remove the
tourniquet and withdraw recommended volume. Transfer this volume to the Myco/F Lytic bottle or Isolator tube.
5.Remove the needle and immediately mix blood by gently inverting four or five times.
6. Discard needle appropriately.
7. Label the specimen with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
8. Maintain sterility and transport to the Northwell Health Laboratories – Little Neck Parkway
within 10 hours, at room temperature.
Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
*Rejection Criteria: Quantity not sufficient, specimen leaking, unlabeled or mislabeled specimen, specimen without a minimum of 2 patient identifiers, specimen received after prolonged delay (more than 7 days).
