This is a screening test for the presence of CRE (Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacterales) organisms Klebsiella pneumoniae and E.coli from rectal swabs. This test is intended only as a surveillance culture for infection control purposes.
CRE organisms pose challenge for infection control in health-care facilities and also for treatment of infections.
CRE organisms are associated with resistance to all Carbapenem class of antibiotics such as Ertapenem, Imipenem and Meropenem.

Collection Instructions
Rectal Collection:
1. Swab rectum using sterile culture transport swab.
2. Return swab to sterile culture transport tube to ensure specimen preservation.
3. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at room temperature.
Rejection criteria
Stool specimen, Eswab or culture swab > 3 days old.
