Collection Instructions

Specimen Required: Nasopharyngeal swab or nasal swab
1. Collect specimen using a flexible shaft nasopharyngeal flocked swab. A Dacron, rayon, or nylon swab with plastic or wire shafts is also acceptable. (Calcium alginate, charcoal, or cotton tipped swab with wooden or metal shaft are not acceptable.)
2. For NP swab, gently slide swab along floor of nose with very light pressure to nasopharyngeal wall to allow the swab to absorb secretions. For nasal swab, insert swab about 1-2 cm into nares. Allow swab to absorb secretions.
3. For NP Swab, rotate swab slowly two to three times and withdraw it. For nasal swab slowly rotate 4-5 times and withdraw.
4. Place the swab into a tube containing 2mL or 3 mL of viral transport medium (M4 or UTM), close tightly. Mix the specimen by rapidly inverting several times.
5. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and time of collection, and specimen type.
Specimen can be stored at RT(15-30°C) for 8 hours and refrigerated (2°C to 8°C) for up to 7 days
