EPIC Order Name

Respiratory Pathogen Panel Molecular Detection

Clinical Info

This is a multiplex molecular panel which detects the following organisms: Influenza A (including subtypes), Influenza B, RSV, SARS-CoV-2, Adenovirus, Seasonal Coronaviruses, Rhinovirus/Enterovirus, Human Metapneumovirus, Parainfluenza virus 1-4, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Chlamydia pneumoniae.
For most patients with seasonal respiratory illness, the recommended test order is "Influenza A/Influenza B/RSV/COVID-19 (Respiratory 4-plex) Panel Molecular Detection".

Specimen Type

Swab, Conjucntival/Corneal, Nasopharyngeal

Container

Conjunctiva Swab

Collection Instructions

Nasopharyngeal Swab
1. Collect specimen using a flexible shaft nasopharyngeal flocked swab.
2. Gently slide swab along floor of nose with very light pressure to nasopharyngeal wall to allow the swab to absorb secretions.
3. Rotate swab slowly two to three times and withdraw it.
4. Place the swab into a tube containing 3 mL of viral transport medium (M4 or UTM) close tightly.
5. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
6. Send specimen refrigerated.
7. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

Methodology

Multiplex Amplified nucleic acid test that uses Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Pathogens detected include:

Influenza A virus (H1, H1-2009, H3)
Influenza B virus
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV)
Parainfluenza virus (Types 1, 2, 3, 4)
Rhinovirus/Enterovirus*
* Due to the similarity of the conserved genetic region in Rhinoviruses and Enteroviruses, these viruses cannot be differentiated and are reported together
SARS-CoV-2
Coronavirus (229E, HKU1, NL63, OC43)
Adenovirus
Chlamydia pneumoniae
Mycoplasma pneumoniae
