Collection Instructions

 Specimen Collection: : BD™ Liquid Amies Elution Swab (ESwab), Liquid Amies Single Plastic Applicator, Liquid Stuart Single Plastic Applicator, Puritan Liquid Amies Transport System, CultureSwab Plus Amies Gel without charcoal and Sterile Rayon and Polyester Throat Swabs.
Collection:
Obtain specimen using a culture transport swab.
Tilt patient’s head back to assist in opening of mouth as wide as possible.
Depress tongue with a tongue depressor so swab does not touch oral mucosa or tongue.
If patient has complained of 1 spot being sore, swab that area well.
In 1 continuous motion:
Swab 1 tonsillar area up then down.
Move to back of throat as far down as possible and swab there.
Move to other tonsillar area and swab.
Swab behind uvula and remove swab.
Return swab to sterile culture transport tube to ensure specimen preservation.
Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
