Clinical Info

Leukemias and lymphomas are characterized by the presence of clonal B-or T-cell populations. Rearrangement of the antigen receptor genes occur during the ontogeny of B and T cell lymphocytes. The rearrangements are unique in length and sequence for each cell. Immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) and Kappa Light chain (IGK) gene rearrangement assays are useful for the identification of clonal B-cell
populations. Immunoglobulins are composed of heavy (IGH) and light (IGK and IGL) chains and are synthesized in B-cells by rearrangement of genes containing Variable, Diversity, Constant and Joining
regions. Each one is the product of rearrangement of the Variable, Diversity, Constant and Joining regions of the respective genes. Each B- and T-cell has a single productive V-J rearrangement that is unique in both length and sequence.
