CSF Shunt cultures are intended for patients with indwelling VP shunts and are incubated under extended conditions to allow for the growth of organisms commonly associated with colonized hardware, including Cutibacterium acnes. All culture orders include Gram stain.

Methodology

Bacterial culture and Gram-stain
Gram-stain: all CSF specimen types.
Shunt collection: examined for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, cultured for 14 days.
Routine isolation, identification procedures, and antibiotic susceptibility testing will be performed when appropriate.
