A single point mutation in exon 10 of Factor V gene leads to a pro-thrombotic state. The incidence of this mutation in the general population is 3-8% (depending on ethnicity). Caucasians are the most affected. Factor V Leiden has been estimated to be present in 15 to 20 percent of patients with first venous thromboembolism, VTE and is the most common heritable pro-thrombotic risk factor in the United States. |
