Clinical Info

The Gram stain is a rapid, preliminary test to assess the quality of specimens, identify bacterial infections, and to guide initial antibacterial therapy.
NOTES:
• Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
• Gram Stain is automatically included when a culture is ordered for the following sources: body fluid, CSF, tissue, bronchial alveolar lavage, sputum and surgical swabs received in Eswabs.
• Gram stain is not reliable for diagnosis of cervical, rectal, pharyngeal, or asymptomatic urethral gonococcal infection. In these cases, culture or molecular detection should be ordered.
