As of October 1st, 2025, This test is only performed for patients located at Lenox Hill Hospital. For any other hospital or outpatient orders, malaria PCR and/or Babesia PCR should be ordered depending on clinical concern. If rule out of blood parasites other than malaria or Babesia is required, please INDICATE CLEARLY which parasites need to be ruled out and forward specimen to the Microbiology Laboratory. Specimens received in Microbiology without clear instructions as to what parasites are in the differential will be delayed in processing pending this information.

No blood parasites observed by giemsa stain


% parasitemia is performed on all positives.
 
Includes detection and identification of pathogens that can typically only be acquired through travel to endemic areas, such as Plasmodium spp. (malaria), microfilaria, trypanosoma, and other blood parasites. Parasitemia will automatically be performed on Plasmodium spp. positive samples.
