Clinical Info

Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel Molecular Detection is the preferred test for comprehensive evaluation of infectious diarrhea. Stool cultures are examined only for Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, Aeromonas, Plesiomonas, Vibrio, E.coli O157 and Yersinia.

Collection Instructions

Container/Tube:  Cary-Blair stool culture transport medium
Specimen: 1 g or 1 mL stool
Transport Temperature: Room Temperature
 
Collection Instructions: Collect in clean, dry container and then transfer a minimum of 1 gram or 1 mL into a Cary-Blair stool culture transport medium. Fluid level should reach line on vial.
Only stool in Cary Blair preservative is acceptable for testing. Once transferred to Cary Blair, stool is stable for 72 Hours.
Note: Only one stool per day is accepted for testing. No more than two stool samples per patient will be accepted for testing.
Stool cultures after the third day of hospital admission will not be accepted without approval by the Laboratory.
